Once again, All-Energy the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference, plays home to both a day-long Community and Local Energy Quick Fire Seminar Theatre programme (2 May) and a 90-minute Community and Local Energy conference session, this year looking at ‘Local energy systems in practice’ (3 May). “As ever Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Local Energy Scotland (LES) have turned up trumps and put together two superb programmes,” explains All-Energy’s Event Director, Jonathan Heastie of Reed Exhibitions who own and organise the two-day event at Glasgow’s SEC on 2 and 3 May.

“The Quick Fire theatre on Wednesday 2 May showcases innovative, low carbon, community and local energy projects from across Scotland in a high-energy full day programme. There are 26 speakers in all across six themes – innovative solutions (a theme that runs throughout All-Energy and the co-located Smart Urban Mobility Solutions); local transport; partnerships and collaboration; local heat; financing; and support to deliver.

“It will open with an introduction by Audrey MacIver, Director of Energy and Low Carbon, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Chris Morris, CARES Programme Manager, Local Energy Scotland. Christine MacKay, Policy Adviser – Local Energy Systems, Scottish Government will then provide an update on the review of the Scottish Government Good Practice Principles (Shared Ownership & Community Benefit).

“I always have the impression that for anyone involved in community and local energy projects this six and a quarter hour free-to-attend session provides a magnificent ‘one-stop-shop’ for gathering a tremendous amount of highly relevant information. In fact some people stay in the Quick Fire Theatre all day long.  We would like to thank HIE and LES most sincerely for all that they do at All-Energy.”

Moving to Thursday’s programme

‘Community and local energy: Local energy systems in practice’ in the main conference on Thursday (3 May) morning sees a packed programme. Under the chairmanship of Audrey MacIver it starts by taking a pan-UK view and then a Scottish view with Patrick Allcorn, Head of Local Energy, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) speaking on ‘The role of local energy in the UK energy system’; followed by Anna Kynaston, Team Leader – Low Carbon Investment and Public Sector Energy Efficiency at the Scottish Government talking about ‘Local energy: Scottish Government vision and emerging policy’.

Once they have set the scene, four more presentations follow:

• The local future of energy: A decentralised future? – Christianna Logan, Energy Networks Insights Manager, Business Planning and Performance, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks
• Building the capacity of communities to participate in the smart energy revolution – Gillian Wilson, Head of Development, Community Energy Scotland
• Fair Isle local energy system and Drumnadrochit local energy ambitions – Susan Clark, Owner, Great Glen Consulting
• CARES support, local energy planning (COBEN) and post feed-in tariff delivery models for communities – Chris Morris, Local Energy Scotland, CARES Programme Manager

The session ends with a panel discussion involving members of the audience. The conference session is free to attend, like all component parts of All-Energy – the major exhibition with 300+ exhibiting companies; the conference with over 110 hours of presentations and panel discussions; the networking opportunities (such as the Giant Networking Evening; POWERful Connections/POWERful Women networking event; special lunches for farmers eager to meet suppliers on a 1-2-1 basis – and local authority officials doing the same; and an investors’ breakfast).
