Triodos Bank named as most active global lead arranger for financing of renewable energy projects

1 May 2018:  Triodos Bank, Europe’s leading sustainable bank, has topped the Clean Energy Pipeline Global League Tables by number of clean energy deals for the third year running. Triodos provided finance for 68 deals in 2017 across Europe totalling $698 million (USD). The deals incorporate wind, solar, hydro, energy efficiency and energy storage projects.

Philip Bazin, Energy Sector Lead, Triodos Bank UK, said: “We continue to innovate and diversify, driven by our desire to support the development of a low carbon, resilient and balanced energy system that is 100 per cent sustainable and fair. As a European bank with unique experience in renewable energy finance, we provide flexibility and fund projects of all different sizes, including smaller or community-level ones that many other banks and debt funds are not prepared to look at.”

Financing in 2017 included the Greensky wind project in Belgium for Engie with 16 Vestas wind turbines alongside the E40 highway and a high-speed train railway, three private wire onshore wind turbines for UK green energy supplier Ecotricity and the refinancing of two solar projects in the UK for Spanish developer Gamma Solutions SL.

Bazin continued: “Triodos is also adapting its services as funding and regulation changes across Europe, offering new products such as crowdfunding platforms and strategic relationships and partnerships. Meanwhile, where new support mechanisms are being developed and launched, we ensure that we are ready to support our customers and the sector; for example, in France last year, we financed one of the first wind projects under the new Contract for Difference 2016 scheme.”

Triodos Bank entered the renewables market in the mid-1980’s with a focus on wind energy and has since broadened its focus across the wider renewable and environmental sectors. In 2018, Triodos will also be looking to develop support for energy storage, grid infrastructure, smart meters and heat networks.
