The 19th All-Energy, the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference, and the inaugural co-located Dcarbonise, focussing on energy efficiency and low carbon heat and transport are being held on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th May at Glasgow’s SEC. The major exhibition features 250 exhibiting companies (including at least 70 new ones exhibiting for the first time this year); and well over 450 conference and seminar speakers. With innovation very much a central theme in both the exhibition and conference there is much to see and many to learn from.
Opening morning (15 May) sees a stellar line-up for the opening plenary conference session. The Lord Provost of the City of Glasgow will give the Civic Welcome and be followed by keynote addresses by Scotland’s First Minister Rt Hon Nicola Sturgeon MSP; ScottishPower’s CEO, Keith Anderson; Chris Stark, CEO of the Committee on Climate Change; Cllr Susan Aitken Leader of Glasgow City Council; and Professor Karen Turner, Director of the Centre for Energy Policy at Strathclyde University and Just Transition Commissioner. All highly relevant, for the event is held against the backdrop of some true landmark moments from the past 10 days.
Last week saw the Committee on Climate Change publish its Net Zero report on greenhouse gas emissions with a target of 2050 for the UK and 2045 for Scotland; and the UK Parliament, become the first in the world, to vote to declare an ‘environmental and climate emergency’.
Prior to this, Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, had declared a ‘climate emergency’ at the SNP conference on 28 April; and Wales’ Environment Minister Lesley Griffiths did the same on 29 April. By 2 May amendments to Scotland’s Climate Change Bill had been lodged to set a legally binding target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 at the latest with Scotland becoming carbon neutral by 2040. And, on Sunday 5 May Edinburgh became the first UK city to join the Open Streets movement, with certain Old Town roads to be closed on the first Sunday of every month

All-Energy, the history: All-Energy, the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy and clean growth exhibition and conference has been held annually since 2001; the first Dcarbonise is being held 2019. The first 14 All-Energy events were held in Aberdeen; the show moved to Glasgow in 2015.
All-Energy/Dcarbonise, the facts:
After both days’ plenary session, the conferences for the two co-located events gets underway. Energy efficiency, low carbon heat and low carbon transport are the three ‘pillars’ of Dcarbonise. The triumvirate of the Scottish Government, Energy Saving Trust and Zero Waste Scotland has a large central pavilion in the exhibition where 1-2-1 advice will be readily on offer, particularly to private sector landlords who face the challenge of ensuring that their property reaches EPC rating E (at least) by 1 April 2020.
All three Dcarbonise ‘pillars’ have full conference programmes, and, in the case of energy efficiency and low carbon heat, these include readily accessed seminar theatres on the exhibition show floor with a rolling programme of presentations. Other relevant conference sessions include those looking at low carbon transport under the Smart Urban Mobility Solutions ‘banner’; sustainable and smart cities; decarbonisation of industry; the ‘net-zero challenge’; and carbon capture and storage.
The All-Energy conference embraces all forms of renewable energy generation (bioenergy, hydropower, marine renewables; on- and offshore wind; and solar) as well as associated topics such as energy systems, energy storage, the grid; hydrogen; and finance and funding.
